Perspective for When Ministry Doesn’t Go as Expected

In a previous post we considered possible reactions to when ministry goes wrong. Let’s be honest. We don’t always have the healthiest reactions. Proper reactions stem from maintaining a good perspective.

When ministry doesn’t go as expected, ask yourself questions like the following and reflect on God’s Word:

Whose ministry is it?

You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings? What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe – as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. (1 Cor. 3:3-7)

To whom am I responsible?

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Heb. 4:13)

To whom are others responsible?

So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another.  (Rom. 14:12-13a)

When you have the right perspective going into ministry, you will know what to do. — You will faithfully do your part and trust God with the results. You might help others do their part by providing on-going training, equipping, or mentoring. But, you will recognize their responsibility before God as well and trust Him to keep working in and through them.

Ministry will not always go as expected. Then what? Do you have the kind of perspective that will enable you to be faithful in doing your part and then react properly both about yourself and toward others no matter what happens? Think about it!

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Gal. 6:9)

“In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1 Pet. 1:6-7)

“So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.” (1 Pet. 4:19)

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Pet. 5:6-11)
