Winter Season Reminders of God

Share:

Using winter scene displays or decor is one way to remind people of our Creator God. We can also use activities or take home handouts with a winter theme to serve as reminders of God’s truth. God Himself uses word pictures in Scripture that sometimes pull in a seasonal reference like Isaiah 1:18. — “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” That image reminds us that we have a merciful and gracious God.

Crafts & Other Activities that Tie into the Winter Season

Children especially learn through repetition so the more we depict a lesson’s truth in different ways, the more we will reinforce what they’re learning. A winter themed craft or activity might use a verse unrelated to the season to reinforce that day’s lesson but it can serve a dual purpose of pointing them to the Creator of all things.

Winter Scenes Display the Wonders of Our God

Share:

We serve a God who created the world to be divided into seasons, winter being one of them.

It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. (Ps. 74:17)

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease (Gen. 8:22)

Our creative God has provided us with a backdrop that displays His wonders which we can visualize in our classrooms, homes, and other locations as a means of pointing people to the Creator.

Ministry Ideas for Seasonal Displays Using Winter Scenes

Not every place in the world experiences snow during the winter. For some it may be just a more barren time of the year with the promise of spring on its heels. Whatever our environment, we can see the hand of God.

When looking at keywords used to access MinTools.com, I am amazed by how many come to the site looking for help with seasonal bulletin board ideas.  Searches include “Bible verses for winter bulletin boards,” “winter bulletin board ideas,” or similar, depending on the season.

The site does provide some resources, like seasonal bulletin board idea books, teacher training tips, and some articles, but I thought it would also be helpful to write a post for each of the seasons.  We’ll start with the winter season.

Bible Verses for Winter Bulletin Boards:

When looking for Bible verses to use on bulletin boards, just because the word “winter” appears, doesn’t mean it would be good for a bulletin board.  The verse needs to make sense without the context for it to stand alone.  Following are some possibilities.  How much of the verse you would use might depend on the age viewing it or the size of the board.

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.  (Gen. 8:22)

It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.  (Ps. 74:17)

Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.  (Hos. 6:3)

Finding verses using the word “winter” that make sense without the context didn’t leave us with a lot of verses.  Next, I thought of concepts, events, phenomenon found within the seasons and that opened the field.  For example, when we think of winter, we might visualize snow.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.  (Ps. 51:7)

He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.  (Ps. 147:16)

Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.  (Isa. 1:18)

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isa. 55:10-11)

Think also of the stillness you can sense going outside in freshly fallen snow and this verse fits:

Be still, and know that I am God. (Ps. 46:10)

Bulletin Board Design:

You could design a full-scale winter scene with a Bible verse strategically placed.

You could build an interactive board wherein students make images or snowflakes to add to a basic design you’ve already put up.  Maybe you could have them write a prayer request on an item they will add or perhaps something about that season of the year for which they are thankful.

Winter Bulletin Board Border, Accents, Cututs

Or, you could make a simple display using winter borders or trim with the verse in the middle, perhaps putting some accents or cut-outs throughout the verse. (Click on the image to check out possibilities in one of our affiliate stores.)

Perhaps you don’t have a budget to purchase trim or maybe what you can find doesn’t appropriately fit your theme or age slant.
  • Look for pictures of winter scenes in old church bulletins or from magazines.  (Saving pictures to a picture file throughout the year helps for upcoming needs.)
  • Make your own snowflakes from white paper.
  • Cut out simple silhouette images to use against a contrasting background.
  • Print pictures from graphic programs or pull from your own digital photography of winter scenes.

Designing a bulletin board that will be displayed throughout the entire season is one possibility but you could also think of church events or holidays within that particular season.  Maybe your church is having a winter retreat which could lend itself to many ideas.  Of course, Christmas would open up lots of possibilities.

(If you want to share bulletin board ideas you’ve used for the winter season to help others, feel free to leave a comment.)
