Bible Verses about Grandparents

Share:

While there are Scripture verses pertaining to old age in Scripture that are often used for grandparents, this post will look at only those verses that directly suggest grandparenting. Some grandparents can be more in the middle-age range than in their senior years so the verses chosen apply to all grandparents.

Grandparents

Responsibility of Grandparents Toward Their Grandchildren:

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (Deut. 4:9)

One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. (Ps. 145:4)

Reward in Having Grandchildren:

Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. (Prov. 17:6)

Role Grandparents can have in Spiritual Development of Grandchildren:

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (2 Tim. 1:5)

Reach of Grandparents into Future Generations:

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation. (Ex. 34:6-7)

I have been young, and now I am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, or his descendants begging bread. (Ps. 37:25)

But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children (Ps. 103:17)

A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous. (Prov. 13:22)

Repayment of Grandchildren to Grandparents:

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. (1 Tim. 5:4)

    • I’m so glad this post has been helpful, Carol. May God use you in the life of your grandchild (grandchildren). May you find this season of your life to be a blessing and honor.

    • Thank you so very much. Your sharing have enlightened me on this morning in the role that I MUST be in the lives of my grandchildren.

      • You are welcome, Delores. Praise God for His Word to give guidance in this important role you’ve been blessed to enjoy!

    • I need a good verse for my mom. I’ve tried so many times for her to have a relationship with her grandkids but she won’t make an effort to see them.

      • I hope some of these verses are helpful, Jamie. In order for grandparents to fulfill their responsibilities and leave the legacy these Scripture verses suggest, it does imply spending time with them. These are the Bible verses I know of that most refer to the impact grandparents can have on their grandkids.

  1. “Not Only Is It A Blessing To Be A Grandmother” It’s an Awesome Honor To Get That Privilege: And I Thank God Everyday For Being A Good GRANDMOTHER!

  2. My grandson’s mother claims to want to do right by god but is keeping our grandson away from us and uses any excuse to do so. My son is scared he will loose his son if he goes against her she has threatened him many times. She came from a broken family and I don’t know more than that but our family has always been close, loving and caring. It’s killing us not to be able to see our grandson, nephew. Can you give us words of wisdom please?…

    • Hello, Beth. I am so sorry to read about what is happening with you not being able to see your grandson. It is very difficult to give advice in a situation like this because there are so many variables I do not know. Most certainly I can say that you should continue to pray about the situation that God would bring to light what is happening so it can get resolved. Unless you know what the problem is, it may be difficult to move forward. However, if you try to force the issue with her, she may pull back even more. Try to keep the connection with your son, encouraging him to seek after God in this. I would also encourage you to find someone local with whom you can talk and pray face to face such as a pastor, Christian counselor, or godly friend. It’s very important that you always guard your attitude and respond in a godly manner rather than react out of hurt and anger. Keep extending God’s love toward her and trust God to work in her heart. In addition to praying, that may be about all you can at this point.

  3. I too am a grandmother, and I have the privilege of being in my grandson’s life. I see him alternate weekends, and he gets an opportunity to sleep over. I feel so blessed. My biggest blessing is when I read him the Creation Story, and pray with him. He is only three years old, but his response is heart warming.

My grandson has also inspired me to write my first Children’s Book entitled “I LOVE YOU, GRANDMA!”. To all the grandmothers and grandfathers. God bless you. To those who are unable to participate in the lives of their grandchildren through no fault of theirs; pray without ceasing. God is listening.

    • Hello, Sheila. While you are being greatly blessed as you relate with your grandson, even being inspired to write a book because of him, I am sure he is being blessed as well! Even at three years old, your time of reading Bible stories and praying with your grandson is undoubtedly laying a spiritual foundation in his life. Praise God you have this opportunity, indeed a privilege!
