Beyond a National Day of Prayer

Share:

The first first Thursday of every May is the annual National Day of Prayer here in the United States.  As of 2011, we will have observed this day for 60 years.

One might ask, however, when looking at the state of this country, what all those years of this prayer campaign have accomplished.  In many ways we are much worse than we were 60 years ago.

Points to Consider Regarding the Benefits of a National Day of Prayer:

  1. Our real hope is in the God to whom we pray and not the prayers themselves.  Prayer is merely the means by which we access the throne of grace.  God uses prayer but ultimately it needs to be about HIM and not us.
  1. We need more than a day of prayer.  The early church was devoted to prayer (Acts 2:42).  Are we as individuals and churches engaged in a lifestyle of prayer … constantly being aware of the presence of God in our lives and ready to communicate with Him at all times?

The benefit of such a day seems to be that it does draw the focus of people onto praying, those who may not regularly be praying for our country, maybe hardly praying at all.  How can we capture this focus and sustain it?

Prayer Ministry Manual to Go Beyond a National Day of PrayerMinistry Tools Resource Center provides a section on maintaining a prayer ministry which forms the basis of the Prayer Ministry Manual. You’ll also find a page filled with prayer resources.  The National Day of Prayer will come and go but perhaps this training and the additional resources can help you take it beyond.

  1. Hi,
Many, many people have a strong basis in spirituality. Although there are many different religious faiths, and many different forms of spirituality, the belief in some type of higher power unites the vast majority of people around the world, and brings solace to many in times of stress and crisis.

  2. The truth is God has gone to great depths and lengths to bring his people to the unity that is His Spirit of Life, the spirit of Love. For God so loved the world he gave his only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Until we accept this and share this to the ends of the world, we will still be killing each other on the battlefield, in the market, in all our worldly pursuits. Jesus was sent to show us the way. Jesus is the (stuff, the glue) that holds us together in unity and Love. He is the way, the truth, and the life, not just one among many other higher powers. If we deny Him, He will deny us. That is why the country is in the state of confusion. But there is always hope for his people because He is faithful to save all that call upon Him. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, forever and ever. So today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart, Everyday is a gift from God, and we should praise Him everyday.

    • Yes, to be sure, Lezah, where there is God, there is hope! If He would go to such an extent to bring people to Himself and establish His church, how much more He would be willing to do as we yield to Him!! “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Rom. 8:32)
