{"id":6746,"date":"2011-06-29T13:00:36","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mintools.com\/blog\/?p=6746"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:03:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:03:50","slug":"empathy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mintools.com\/blog\/empathy.htm","title":{"rendered":"Putting Yourself in Someone Else&#8217;s Shoes &#8211; Why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I put up a two page document on <a title=\"Role Playing as a Bible Teaching Method\" href=\"https:\/\/mintools-store.com\/products\/role-playing-method\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Role Playing as a Bible Teaching Method<\/a> in the MinTools.com store.\u00a0 Having students role play a situation helps them develop problem solving skills but also empathy.\u00a0 They must &#8220;put themselves in someone else&#8217;s shoes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Exercising empathy would help with much church conflict.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When we look at a situation from only our own perspective or experience base, we risk assigning wrong motives or misinterpreting the feelings, actions, or reactions of others.<\/p>\n<p>When we seek to put ourselves in their shoes, we gain an understanding that often helps us be more patient and supportive of others.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Scriptural Basis for Empathy:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The word &#8220;empathy&#8221; is not used in the Bible but verses do point to our need for it as we relate to one another.<\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin: 25px;\">\n<li>God Himself empathizes with the people He created.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. <span class=\"class2\">(Ps. 103:13-14)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 18px;\"><em>O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.\u00a0 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. <span class=\"class2\">(Ps. 139:1-3)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<ol style=\"margin: 25px;\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Jesus modeled empathy when he lived on this earth among people and continues to empathize.\u00a0 Many verses point to His compassion which is an essential part of empathy, leading Him to do something about what He perceived.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them &#8230;\u00a0<span class=\"class2\">(Matt. 9:36)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.\u00a0 <span class=\"class2\">(Matt. 14:14)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. &#8230; Jesus wept.\u00a0 <span class=\"class2\">(Jn. 11:33, 35)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.\u00a0\u00a0 <span class=\"class2\">(2 Cor.<\/span><span class=\"class2\"> 8:9)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 18px;\"><em>For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are&#8211;yet was without sin. <span class=\"class2\">(Heb. 4:15)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<ol style=\"margin: 25px;\" start=\"3\">\n<li>Empathy is a part of walking in love as God loves.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us &#8230; <span class=\"class2\">(Eph. 5:1-2)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.\u00a0 <span class=\"class2\">(Matt.<\/span><span class=\"class2\"> 7:12)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 18px;\"><em>Love your neighbor as yourself. <span class=\"class2\">(Matt. 22:39)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<ol style=\"margin: 25px;\" start=\"4\">\n<li>Body Life demands we empathize with one another.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/477311260533366199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-35760 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mintools.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/rejoice-mourn-empathize.jpg\" alt=\"Empathize by Rejoicing and Mourning with Others\" width=\"280\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mintools.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/rejoice-mourn-empathize.jpg 280w, https:\/\/mintools.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/rejoice-mourn-empathize-263x300.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nRejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. <span class=\"class2\">(Rom. 12:15)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>&#8230; so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.\u00a0 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. <span class=\"class2\">(1 Cor. 12:25-26)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>Carry each other&#8217;s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. <span class=\"class2\">(Gal. 6:2)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. <span class=\"class2\">(Eph. 4:32)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.\u00a0 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.\u00a0 <span class=\"class2\">(Phil. 2:2-4)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 18px;\"><em>Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.\u00a0 <span class=\"class2\">(1 Pet.<\/span><span class=\"class2\"> 3:8)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<ol style=\"margin: 25px;\" start=\"5\">\n<li>Effectively reaching out to others requires us to put ourselves in their shoes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-bottom: 8px;\"><em>Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. <span class=\"class2\">(Heb. 13:3)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 50px; padding-top: 4px; padding-bottom: 20px;\"><em>I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. <span class=\"class2\">(1 Cor. 9:22)<\/span> <\/em>&#8230; We must conclude that Paul did not literally become all things in every situation but that he identified with them which requires empathy.<\/div>\n<p>An upcoming post will look at <strong><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><a title=\"How to Empathize\" href=\"https:\/\/mintools.com\/blog\/empathize.htm\">how to empathize<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exercising empathy would help with much church conflict.
