We have an Everlasting Father(Isa. 9:6) who always did and always will work on behalf of His children. The qualities within Him that make Him Father are unchanging. It’s who He is that causes Him to go from A to Z for us.
ABC’s of God as Our Father
God acts on our behalf as our Father in many ways. Here are the beginning letters of the alphabet providing just a sampling of how the Bible describes God as our Father.
Adopted us to sonship, making us His children, giving us a place of belonging (Rom. 8:15, 23; 2 Cor. 6:17-18; Gal. 4:4-5; Eph. 1:4-5)
Befriends us, building a relationship with us in which we can feel secure (Rom. 8:14-16; Gal. 4:5-7)
Comforts us, caring for us and extending mercy in our distress (2 Cor. 1:3-4)
Disciplines us, correcting us so we become better (Prov. 3:11-12; Heb. 12:7-10)
Encourages us, spurring us on to that which is good and right (2 Thess. 2:16-17)
Forgives us, not holding our sin against us (Ps. 103:11-14; Lk. 15:11-32)
Gives us an inheritance, making us His heirs (Lk. 12:32; Rom. 8:17; Col. 1:12)

Our God is greater than any other force or being. And, He is greater than all that pertains to us.
— His greatness no one can fathom! (Ps. 145:3)
Our God is wiser than the wisest of men or spiritual beings.
— His understanding no one can fathom. (Isa. 40:28)
If we could grasp the greatness of our God and figure out all of His ways, He would fail to be God for He would be no greater or wiser than our understanding. But, with unfathomable greatness and wisdom, we have an infinite God who “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Eph. 3:20).
Essential for Both God’s Greatness & Understanding to be Unfathomable
We find verses in Scripture where God’s greatness and might accompany His wisdom and understanding.
Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. (Dan. 2:20)
Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. (Ps. 147:5)
This essential combination brings reassurance for we can know that we have a God who will exercise His might with wisdom.
Creation of the Heavens and Earth: Think about the chaos had God merely brought things into existence without exercising wisdom so all the variety fit together in a coordinated and good functioning design.
But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. (Jer. 10:12)

Conclusion of the Heavens and Earth: Think about the judgment God would bring if only exercised by His mighty wrath and not accompanied by wisdom. All would undoubtedly be annihilated in the blink of an eye. His wisdom, however, bridles His great power so as to allow for the salvation of all who would come to Him.
… the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. … The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Pet. 3:7-9)
A God with unfathomable greatness and wisdom can be trusted to not only take care of us now and through eternity but also to do it well, in ways that are for the good. — And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Rom. 8:28)

According to Isaiah 40:28, no one can fathom his understanding. His wisdom is so beyond our ability to comprehend that we don’t even have a point of comparison in any one or any thing. He knows all and He sees all, the beginning from the end, so nothing alludes His understanding of that which is best, just, and good.
If God’s understanding is unfathomable then God is wiser
… than human wisdom
Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. (1 Cor. 1:20-21)
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. (1 Cor. 1:25)
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness” and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” (1 Cor. 3:19-20)
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)
… than even your best thoughts
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isa. 55:8-9)
There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. (Prov. 14:12; 16:25)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Prov. 3:5-6)
… than any counselor we might turn to
Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD, or instruct the LORD as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding? (Isa. 40:13-14)
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? (Rom. 11:33-34)
… than the spiritual forces of evil
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. (Col. 2:15)
His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms (Eph. 3:10)
… than any kind of plot against Him
There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD. (Prov. 21:30)
When we humbly acknowledge how God is so much wiser than us or any other being, we are able to admit that He knows best. We will come to revere and trust Him more and more. As we do, we will learn to apply His wisdom to our lives.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. (Ps. 111:10)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Prov. 9:10)
But, even then, we will merely be tapping in to the surface of the fullness of who He is — “the beginning of wisdom” — which means we will always have more to learn. Let’s not expect or demand to understand all. There will be things we won’t understand. We just need to keep revering and trusting Him because God’s wisdom is unfathomable.

We will never fully comprehend the magnitude of “his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Eph. 1:19).

How God is Greater Than All That Pertains to You
… greater than your circumstances
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Phil. 4:12-13)
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. (2 Cor. 9:8)
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Rom. 8:35-37)
… greater than your weaknesses
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (Isa. 40:29) But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor. 12:9)
That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Cor. 12:10)
… greater than that which seems to confine or limit you
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Eph. 3:20-21)

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (1 Cor. 10:13)

… greater than all your sin and failures
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Ps. 103:11-12)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 Jn. 1:9)
… greater than the condemnation and insecurities of our own heart
This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. (1 Jn. 3:19-20)
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (Rom. 8:1-2)

So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Heb. 13:6)
The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? (Ps. 27:1)

Like the psalmist, we may acknowledge and praise God for His greatness.
Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain. (Ps. 48:1)

But, do we acknowledge that He is greater? … greater than all else? When we do, we can also say with the psalmist …

To truly be GOD, wouldn’t He have to be the one of whom there is none greater?
God is greater than all other forces, natural or supernatural.
… greater than the spiritual forces of evil
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 Jn. 4:4)

When we acknowledge that God is greater than any of these forces, it changes our whole perspective about His rights and sovereignty. We find ourselves submitting to Him and trusting Him to do what’s best. Though we may not understand why He allows what He does in this world, we rest in the confidence that in the end He triumphs over all. We don’t have to understand everything to trust Him. He is GOD, the One of whom there is none greater!
The more we get to know the God of the Bible, the more we should find ourselves concluding that He is greater than all other forces. The nation of Israel repeatedly turned their backs on the God who brought them out of bondage. As a God of new beginnings, He would give them opportunities to start anew by sending deliverers. As long as those judges were still living, the people would follow God. After these leaders died, they would go back to their wayward living. As a consequence, God would eventually exile them from the Promised Land. But even then, God would not totally give up on them.
A God of New Beginnings
2 Kings 19 comes after the King of Assyria was trying to instill doubts and fears into the people that God was inadequate to deliver them. Hezekiah, king of Judah at the time, prayed to God about the situation. Isaiah the prophet was sent to let Hezekiah know that God is a God of new beginnings. He would restore a remnant of His people. Notice the words “once more” in the following verse.
Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. (2 Kings 19:30)
This remnant would again be established and grow. God would first work in ways that are unseen (root below) to produce the outward growth (fruit above). Eventually the Messiah would even come from this root.
Reason for God’s New Beginnings
Let’s be clear that the people were not restored because they deserved it. They didn’t receive new beginnings because of what they would do but rather because of what God would do. We cannot stop at verse thirty.
For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. (2 Kings 19:31)
How interesting that the verse doesn’t say “the power of the Lord” but rather “the zeal of the Lord” will accomplish it. God’s intense feelings or passion toward His people drives Him to over and over again to provide His people with new beginnings.
What about us beginning new today?
These verses were written about the kingdom of Judah. However, the God who was jealous for them, is also our God. If we are in Christ, we are His people.
if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. (2 Tim. 2:13)
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Phil. 1:6)
As a result of His faithfulness and His zeal toward us, new beginnings are possible! Let’s give Him all the glory!!
