Bored? – Cure for Boredom in the Christian Life

Share:

Did you know that July is National Anti-Boredom Month?  I’m not making it up!  It got me to thinking about how some people think Christianity is boring. Is there a cure for boredom in the Christian life?

Taking a Leap of Faith as a Cure for Boredom in the Christian Life

Abundant Life So Don't Need to Experience Boredom in the Christian Life
Jesus came to give us “life and have it to the full” (Jn. 10:10), exceedingly abundant life. So, why might Christianity seem boring? Perhaps we get bored because we aren’t taking any risks for Jesus.  Let me illustrate:

Somebody doing a bungee jump might dive off of a bridge plummeting toward the river below.  Just before impact, the elastic cord yanks him back.  He/she put total faith in that bungee cord.

As “bungee jumpers for Jesus” we wouldn’t be bored!  We would be willing to leave our comfort zones and step out for Jesus … to take that leap of faith.  We would obey Him in all situations, especially those that are out of our control.  We would trust Him fully.  We would act on what we say we believe.

Think of the “bungee jumpers” in Scripture:  Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joseph, David, etc.  I highly doubt if they were bored.  They went to the edge and took the plunge, being confident that God would hold on to them even though they didn’t see or feel like it.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.  This is what the ancients were commended for.  (Heb. 11:1-2)

Think about these questions:

  • What are some low risk plunges for you as a Christian?
  • What are some higher risk plunges for you as a Christian?

A sure cure for boredom in the Christian life is to take some faith risks, to make a difference.  If we never take risks, we will have little need for faith.  We can start with the lower risk plunges.  As we do, we will find God to be totally reliable.  We will find Him to be all-sufficient.  Then we will be ready to take some higher risk plunges for Him . . . and be bored no more!

What plunges have you taken recently?

At the Core of Serving

Share:

Our walk with God is a critical component of ministry. It’s at the core of serving. If we struggle in our walk, our ministry will not reach its potential effectiveness.

When Our Walk with God is at the Core of Serving

Our walk with God refers to more than what we do. It also involves our hearts. To love the Lord and then to love others (Matt. 22:36-40) tops God’s priorities. Everything else we do pales next to that.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.  (1 Cor. 13:1-3)

The use of our spiritual gifts needs to flow out of our love relationship and walk with Him for apart from Him, we can do nothing (Jn. 15:5).  Jesus spoke those words in the context of abiding in Him.

Because Walking with God is a Core Component of Serving, Nurture Your Walk

As a site about equipping believers for ministry, it’s important to not only deal with spiritual gifts and ministry areas and issues but also to emphasize our walk with God. To this end, you’ll find resources on various aspects of our walk with Him. And, you can benefit from the Walk the Walk Devotional series.

The first Walk devotional I wrote extends the invitation, Let’s Walk the Walk, giving a more general presentation of what it is to walk the walk.

Walk in Wisdom let’s us know that we do need to be careful, discerning, and alert as we walk with Him through life.

Walk as Those Who Have Gone Before provides models, or examples, to show us how.

And, Walk Even When It Hurts reminds us that God provides what we need to keeping walking even when life is hard.

Are you nurturing your walk with God?  To maintain life and energy in serving and not just get the job done …  to be spiritually effective and not just productive …. you must guard your walk with Him!

What God Uses to Build His Kingdom

Share:

We know, according to 1 Corinthians 1:20-31, that God uses people to build His kingdom who we wouldn’t normally think of as influential.  What I am also amazed at is how God uses what we do in ways we would never expect and beyond what we would imagine.  Let me give a personal example of what God uses.

Example of How What God Uses to Build His Kingdom is Often the Unexpected

Recently I tried to help a friend who was struggling with maintaining a healthy perspective to grab hold of some pertinent truths foundational to her struggles.  I wrote out a 40 day challenge for her.  She found it so helpful that only part way through the challenge, she told her sister living in a different state about it who also wanted to take the challenge.  Her sister in turn gave the challenge to others including a professional counselor.  The counselor has requested permission and proper documentation to use it in a speaking engagement to pass on to others.

Who knew??  What started out as simply helping a friend is being used by God to help more people than I ever imagined.   I have now reformatted it, made it into a PDF, and put it up on the MinTools.com site as a tool for others who might also benefit from it.
