If the Bible is Accurate, Then What?

Share:

Perception of Bible as AccurateA previous post listed results from a Barna report on how young people today view the Bible differently from other generations.  The second point was that they see it as . . . LESS ACCURATE.

The Inerrancy of Scripture:  total accuracy, no mistakes

If inerrant, then it becomes an absolute standard that can be considered reliable and trustworthy.

If some errors, then its words cannot be fully trusted and we have an excuse for not living by it.

Factors that Affect If People Believe the Bible is Accurate

What people believe about the Bible’s accuracy boils down to two factors:

1)  Our view of God:

Is God sovereign enough to use fallible human beings to get it right and to pass it on through the generations and countless translations in a form that maintains its integrity as God’s Word?

2)  Our view of man:

Is man capable of completely understanding Scripture?  Is it possible that man, in his finite state, simply can’t piece together the perceived inconsistencies?  Or, is man equal or superior to God in his ability to comprehend eternal matters, capable of judging its veracity?

If God is viewed as sovereign and man as limited in his ability to understand, then we step out in faith … not a blind faith, but a faith in a God who is all-knowing and all-powerful.

If God is viewed as limited and man as all-knowing, then we become skeptical and doubt that He can accurately communicate through His written Word.

Do you want to convince people that the Bible is accurate?

1)  Present to them a God who is sovereign.
2)  Help them gain a more accurate view of themselves.

If the Bible is Sacred, Then What?

Share:

Perception of Bible as SacredA previous post listed results from a Barna report on how young people today view the Bible differently from other generations.  The first point was that they see it as . . . LESS SACRED.

If sacred, then it is to be revered, seen as worthy of our devotion, something to be set apart from or above other writings.

If it is not as sacred, then it can be treated with less respect and can more easily be disregarded when inconvenient or when we don’t like what it says.

While we could point to Scripture about itself depicting its holy character, if people are skeptical about the veracity of the Bible and maybe even its origin, these verses will have little impact.  Perhaps that is the starting point.  If people become convinced of the “inspiration” of God’s Word, then they might find it more useful.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

How to Help People Understand that the Bible is Sacred

The context of 2 Tim. 3:16-17 shows how Timothy grabbed hold of such a view of Scripture — “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (vs. 14-15).

Note that the Apostle Paul didn’t just say “you have known the Scriptures.”  Rather, he said “you have known the HOLY Scriptures.”  How did Timothy acquire such a perspective?

Intentional Teaching  –  He “learned it.”

Being parented by Christians did not automatically make Him revere God’s Word.  He was purposefully nurtured or trained in and about God’s Word.

Are we helping teachers teach a lesson worth teaching purposefully based in God’s Sacred Word?

> Workbook for Training Teachers: A Lesson Worth Teaching

Incarnational Teaching  –  He learned it from those he knew who lived it.

Instruction would have been verbally communicated but in the context of real life.  It was modeled instruction by those who held such a high view of Scripture themselves.

Are we ourselves convinced of the sacredness of God’s Word and treating it as such?

Do we open our lives before others, as parents, teachers, leaders, that they can see, not just hear, our respect and devotion to the Word?

Incremental Teaching  –  He learned it “from infancy.”

They did not wait to teach him until he was old enough to get a good grasp of the Word.  They began the learning process in his earliest stage of development, as an infant, and continued “from” that point.  They obviously believed that even babies can learn that God’s Word is special.

Are You Suffering Persecution for Jesus?

Share:

I have to admit that I know very little about what it is to be persecuted for Jesus.  Sure, I have experienced some negative reactions from others because of my relationship with Jesus Christ but I haven’t ever gone to prison for my faith, shed blood, had property destroyed, or been ex-communicated because of it.  But, I have brothers and sisters around the world who this very day are experiencing great hardship because of their commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Some will even die as martyrs.

If you aren’t suffering persecution for Jesus, are your remembering those who are?

You can start by:

1)  Increasing your awareness of what is happening around the world to fellow believers

Below are some books from an affiliate store that could help your understanding:

Check out the web site of one or more of these organizations. Follow them on their social media pages to keep up with what is happening.

2)  Praying for those who are persecuted

Don’t underestimate the power of prayer.

From there God may take you into further involvement.

If you are suffering hardship for Jesus, even if it seems insignificant in comparison to others, here are some promises or realities to grab hold of:

  • You are an overcomer because He is.  Have hope in Him.  (Jn. 16:33)
  • You are secure in His love.  Hold on to it.  (Rom. 8:35)
  • You are considered blessed.  Be at peace.   (Matt. 5:10-11)
  • You will be rewarded because of it.  Hang in there.  (Matt. 5:11-12)
  • You will be restored.  Stand firm.  (1 Pet. 5:8-10)

With these realities comes a sense of purpose in suffering for Him, knowing that we will be okay no matter what happens which then results in:

> an ability to take heart (Jn. 16:33) and rejoice and be glad even in persecution (Matt. 5:12).

> a sense of security (Rom. 8:35-36) which in turn enables us to look beyond ourselves and care about the one who is persecuting us (Matt. 5:44-45; Rom. 12:14).

Your Walk with God: An Integral Part of Your Ministry Profile

Share:

Walk with God Integral Part of Ministry ProfileYour walk with God is central to effectively serving the Lord.  It is a most integral piece of the puzzle that makes up your ministry profile as it motivates you and helps to keep you on track.

What the Bible Teaches About Your Walk with God

Read the following Scripture about walking with God and consider how it helps you in ministry:

2 Cor. 5:7 – Walking by faith enables you to think big, to step outside of the box and take risks.

Gal. 5:16-26 – Walking in the Spirit helps you keep in step with God rather than operating out of the flesh and yields the kind of heart qualities that will help you maintain the right kind of attitudes, determination, and relational integrity needed in ministry.

Eph. 4:1-7 – Walking worthy of the calling you received leads to the kind of humility and oneness needed in ministry as you realize grace levels the plain.

Eph. 5:1-2; 2 Jn. 1:6 – Walking in love exemplifies a sacrificial spirit as seen in our Lord Jesus, making you willing to go beyond simply what is “expected” of you.

1 Jn. 1:5-2:2 – Walking in His light generates a life of integrity and authenticity that people look for in Christian leaders, teachers, and ministry workers.

1 Jn. 2:3-6 – Walking as Jesus walked provides a pattern and a standard to follow.

3 Jn. 1:3-4; Ps. 86:11 – Walking in truth keeps you faithful to Him and not pulled in every direction, feeling the need to please people or follow the latest fad.

We are the Light of the World – Let’s Live Like It

Light of the World
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matt. 5:14-16)

In Matthew 5:14 Jesus said that we are the light of the world — present tense, a matter of fact … it’s who we are as children of God.   “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light (for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases God” (Eph. 5:8-10).

In taking a stand and living for Him in this world with all its liberal and immoral agendas, the goal is not to make ourselves the issue or debate one’s point of view, but to point them to the True Light by reflecting Him in all we do … His goodness, righteousness, and truth.

What Happens When We Don’t Live Like We’re the Light of the World

Light has many benefits but when we put a bowl or basket over the light, it loses its effect.  We cover the light when . . .

* we are ashamed or too cowardly to speak up for Him  (Light boldly penetrates into the darkness.)

* we feel the need to be politically correct or tolerant rather than reflect Him  (Light stands in stark contrast to the darkness.)

* we fail to acknowledge sin in our own lives and in the world around us  (Light exposes darkness.)

* we present truth without grace (Light has a warming effect, not just one of piercing the darkness.)

Being a light in a dark world is not always easy.  We will not always be understood or accepted but don’t lose heart.  Jesus, the True Light of the World, was not recognized for who He was and what He had to offer the world (Jn. 1:4-10).  He ultimately was put to death on a cross but “for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition, so you will not grow weary  and lose heart” (Heb. 12:2-3).

We are the Salt of the Earth – Let’s Live Like It

Salt of the Earth

Jesus said,
“You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by man.” (Matt. 5:13)

Since we are the salt of the earth, let’s live like it!

How interesting that rather than talk about the qualities and effects of salt, in this verse Jesus only deals with salt losing its saltiness.  Why?  — probably because we need to understand the long range effect and damage it can do when we lose our testimony in the world

Effects of Not Living Like We are the Salt of the Earth

Could it be that we are seeing the effects of Christians not living as the salt of the earth today?

Immorality and liberal ways of thought have so infiltrated the world that people seem blind to truth.

Those who claim that there are absolute truths are viewed as arrogant and intolerant.

Those who take a stand for Christ are so often ridiculed or persecuted.

How did we get here … where Christians are seen as the ones to “be thrown out and trampled by men?”  How did the world get so far off track?

If we as Christians aren’t living as the salt of the earth, the desire for and perceived value of being a Christian decreases.  The salt is losing its saltiness!  If we Christians aren’t living as the salt of the earth, how will the world be seasoned with the truth of God’s Word and His grace?

The salt is losing its saltiness when we no longer see a godly influence in the world.  It is when salt has lost its saltiness that we fail to infiltrate our society with His truth and goodness.

Don’t despair.  A salt shaker contains many grains of salt.  Though some may have lost their saltiness, not all have.  If those who want to still influence the world pull together, a little salt can go a long way!
