Doctrinal Resources for Key Doctrines of the Christian Faith
The Greek word for doctrine in the Bible, didaskalia, simply means that which is taught. It's instruction, or teaching, we learn from the Word of God. When we refer to key doctrines of the Christian faith, we're taking a biblical topic and pulling out all that Scripture teaches about it to form the basis of what we believe. Doctrine not only lays the foundation for what we believe but also for what we do as believers.
Doctrine benefits us for "all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching (didaskalia) ... so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:16-17). We're "nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching (didaskalia)" that we follow (1 Tim. 4:6)). We "encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it" (Titus 1:9). Hence, we heed the Apostle Paul's instruction to Timothy. -- "Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers." (1 Tim. 4:16-17)
