Ministry Assessments Not an End in Themselves

Share:

Ministry assessments can be one of those practices that sound like something we should do. We can even find a biblical basis for them. Yet, they can consume a lot of time so we must take great care that they don’t become an end in themselves. If we merely go through the process and don’t do anything with them, what have we gained?

How to Use Ministry Assessments So They’re Not an End in Themselves

1) Do something with the results.

While the assessment itself may reach its end, the process for resultant change and growth has not. The conclusions of the assessment must be communicated and goals must be implemented. A means of following up on progress must also be put in place.

2) Plan to make assessments an ongoing process.

After asking and answering strategic questions, the assessment process might be completed for the moment. However, we should schedule regular assessments that build on previous assessments if we wish to keep progressing toward God’s potential for our church. We never fully arrive and must continue learning and making adjustments if we want to keep growing.

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (Phil. 3:12)

Spiritual Gifts of Those Involved in Staffing

Spiritual Gifts Needed for Staffing Ministry

An objective of Staffing in the Church: Get the right person for the right ministry at the right time — the person of God’s choosing.

Are you seeking this same objective for those involved in the overall staffing ministry of your church? Just as with other ministries, certain people will be best suited due to spiritual gifting.

Spiritual Gifts of Overall Staff Administrator or Coordinator

Look for someone with the spiritual gift of administration.

Ideally someone with both the gifts of administration and pastor would do quite well, or perhaps with administration and exhortation.

Spiritual Gifts for Specific Aspects of Staffing Ministry

The staff administrator may find it helpful to enlist others in specific areas of staffing. When you think through what’s involved in the various tasks, you may find certain gifts better suited for these different responsibilities.

Assessment, Ministry Profiling, Placement:

spiritual gifts of discernment or knowledge

Recruitment only:

spiritual gift of exhortation

Training Only:

spiritual gift of exhortation

The Staffing Ministry Manual lists the above gifts needed in staffing ministry along with brief suggestions of personality fits as well.

If we’re going to get people involved in ministry based on gifting, doesn’t it only make sense that those who do the staffing likewise have the spiritual gifts best suited for that kind of ministry? And, for aspects of staffing ministry for which they aren’t gifted, doesn’t it make sense that rather than struggle with it that they enlist the help of those whom God has empowered to accomplish those responsibilities?

Biblical Basis for Ministry Assessments?

Share:

The Staffing Ministry section of this site identifies ministry assessment as an element of an effective staffing ministry. The TrainChurchLeaders.com site lists assessments as a church leadership skill.

But, is there a Biblical Basis for Doing Ministry Assessments?

As with anything we do as individual Christians or as a Body of believers, we must ask if it’s biblical. Look at God’s Word and you will find that ministry assessments are:

1) Evidenced in the character and ways of God.

God Makes AssessmentsGod evaluates both what is outwardly visible, as seen in the creation account (Gen. 1), and that which is unseen, such as our hearts (Ps. 139:1-3, 23-24; Heb. 4:12). As Judge, certainly God makes assessments to arrive at His conclusions in accordance with justice and righteousness (Ps. 9:8; 1 Cor. 4:5; 1 Pet. 1:17; Rev. 20:12-13).

To Read:

2) Exhorted in the Word of God.

The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways … (Prov. 14:8)

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength; for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers. (Prov. 24:3-6)

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, … Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? … (Lk. 14:28-32)

Are we lining up with God’s ways when doing ministry assessments?

It isn’t enough to say we can or should do ministry assessments because there’s biblical basis for it. How we develop and use the assessments also need to line up as well. Some of the evidences we’re lining up with God’s ways when doing ministry assessments include:

  • We’re enveloping the whole process with prayer. (Prov. 3:5-6)

Prayerful Assessment Needed for Steps to Change

  • We’re making a conscientious effort to keep God’s purposes in the forefront.

The Right Standard for Assessments
Using Assessment Results in Ways that Line Up

  • We’re aware of the need for assessments to line up with God’s design for the Church.

Guard Body Life When Doing Assessments

  • We’re concerned about how it fits into the big picture of what God is doing.

Ministry Recruitment

Share:

If we do ministry God’s way, then how we recruit needs to line up with His design and desires. Recruitment takes on an elevated importance when it becomes about doing ministry God’s way.

Some Top Tips for Ministry Recruitment

Ministry Recruitment a Joy When Done God's WayView recruitment as a ministry in itself rather than a drudgery. When we work in cooperation with God, recruitment becomes a joyous adventure wherein we help people live out God’s intent.

Seek to get as many people involved in ministry as possible. God designed the Body to grow as everybody does their part (Eph. 4:16).

Look for people with the right fit for the varying ministries. God gives spiritual gifts for a reason.

Encourage the right kind of motivation for getting involved. God wants people who willingly serve out of love.

Follow God’s example in how you go about recruiting people. God has been recruiting people since creation.

Invest sufficient prayer throughout the entire process. Even Jesus prayed before recruiting His disciples, so why wouldn’t we?

Culture Shift Following the Right Course of Action

Culture Shift to Follow God's Design Needs a Course of Action

To make serving, with everybody doing their part, engrained in who we are as a Church, takes a culture shift. We get there by building an awareness of God’s design for the growth and health of the Body as seen in His commands about serving. We accept the challenge of equipping people to do their parts, understanding that it takes time and patience to get there. With the groundwork laid, we then need to put a course of action in place that will facilitate everybody doing their parts.

The Right Course of Action Could Depend on Your Setting

How easy it is to look at what other churches are doing and follow suit. A cookie cutter approach fails to take important factors into consideration.

1) Where you are

The readiness of people makes such a difference in any kind of change. You need to know where people are in order to take them to the next step. If you try to go from A to Z all at once, your efforts are bound to fail. As seen in Proverbs 27:23, you need to “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.”

2) What you already have in place

Sometimes you can build on what you’re already doing. Sometimes you must initiate a new strategy. The specific action steps may vary depending on where you’re beginning and what’s already in place.

Key Factors That Need to Be a Part of Any Course of Action to Promote a Culture Shift

We need to make it an ongoing emphasis and effort, more than a shot in the arm. — People need constant reminders, through various means, that God designed the Church to function in a certain way that brings health and growth to the Body. We can so easily get distracted. We can so quickly forget.

We need to provide tools or a pathway for getting there to sustain this directive in order to make it part of the church’s culture. This could include, but not be limited to:

  • ongoing teaching on God’s design for everybody doing their part — It can be part of Sunday School teaching, small groups, new members classes, sermons, provision of reading materials, talking about it verbally and in writing on any variety of platforms.

  • recruiting based on spiritual gifting — How we recruit is important in demonstrating the value we place on serving.

  • highlighting how people can serve through ministry fairs, pamphlets, or some other means — Knowing what ministries are available, connecting people responsible for overseeing the ministries, and learning how they can plug in to the different ministries, brings it to them rather than waiting on people to come to you.

Culture Shift is a Challenge

Share:

We lay a good foundation for changing people’s attitudes, thinking, and actions toward serving by helping them understand why it’s so important. We help them understand that ultimately they’re accountable to the Lord in following His design, not us. We would hope that would be sufficient to motivate people to do their part. Yet, in many cases making it part of your church’s culture still alludes you.

Why it’s such a Challenge to Shift the Way People Feel About Serving

  • We’re dealing with people’s previous perceptions. We must model a new way of being the church for them.
  • We’re dealing with people’s priorities. We must bear with them as they rearrange what they’ve viewed as more important to align with God’s.
  • We’re dealing with people’s hearts. We must be patient as God does a work in them to move them from self-centeredness to selflessness.

Accept the Challenge that Comes with making a Culture Shift

Culture Shift to Follow God's Design is a Challenge

We need to accept the challenge to equip or disciple people, to function purposefully, even when it seems inconvenience or uncomfortable. — So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up … (Eph. 4:11-14) To “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Heb. 10:24) requires knowing and following the right course of action to get people there … the topic of the next post.

We need to accept the challenge to keep the focus on Christ, who is the Head, not on ourselves. It’s about submitting to Him and His ways, not our own agendas. It’s about depending on Him to sustain us, not our own strength. — Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Eph. 4:15-16)

We need to accept the challenge to persevere, however long it takes. We live in a world of instant gratification. Culture shifts, however, take time. — Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. (Gal. 6:9)
